JIM WHITE
BIOGRAPHY
Drummer Jim White is an active performer and educator. His first musical experiences took place in his hometown of Atlanta, Georgia, where he studied percussion with Paul Yancinch, Mike Cebulski, Sonny Emory, and Jeff Sipe. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of North Texas where he performed with the school’s renowned “One O’clock Lab Band” for three years. After receiving his Bachelor of Music degree in Jazz Studies, Jim was recruited by Maynard Ferguson for his “Big Bop Nouveau” band with which he recorded and toured internationally. He is featured on Ferguson’s 1992 live recording, Footpath Cafe.
In 1995, White moved to Nashville, Tennessee where he remains active as a performer and studio musician. His versatility and unique sound have been featured on many jazz, pop, and country recordings, commercial jingles, and sound library recordings. In 2007 he joined multiple Grammy-Award-winning group Alison Krauss and Union Station for their A Hundred Miles or More tour of the United States. White is also working with legendary songwriter J.D. Souther, playing drums on his upcoming release. In addition to his studio work, he has performed with many top jazz artists including Rufus Reid, Joey Defrancesco, Dick Oatts, Rich Perry, Greg Gisbert, Johannes Weidenmuller, George Garzone, Kevin Mahogany, Steve Wilson, Art Lande, Bob Sheppard, Benny Golson, Jim McNeely, the North German Radio (N.D.R.) Big Band, Eric Alexander and many others.
White is also an active educator, performing clinics at many universities and jazz festivals throughout the country. In 2005, he joined the faculty at the University of Northern Colorado, where he is currently Assistant Professor of Jazz Studies. He directs UNC’s Lab II Big Band, supervises the jazz small group program, and teaches jazz history, while also teaching applied drum set students. He also performs regularly with the UNC Faculty Trio, which features Dana Landry and Erik Applegate. Prior to joining the faculty at UNC, White was affiliated with Middle Tennessee State University where he taught drum set while completing his Master of Arts degree in Jazz Studies/Composition. While at MTSU, he studied composition and arranging with Jamey Simmons.
White has performed and/or is featured on recordings with such diverse artists as J.D. Souther, Alison Krauss and Union Station, Jerry Douglas, Maynard Ferguson, Rufus Reid, Clay Jenkins, Don Aliquo, Shibboleth, Viktor Krauss, Joey DeFrancesco, Charlie Peacock, Jim Ferguson, Chris Potter, Pat Coil, Mike Pope, Bob Dorough, Bob Sheppard, Dick Oatts, Rich Perry, Stefan Karlsson, Kirk Whalum, Annie Sellick, Pam Tillis, Lorrie Morgan, Crystal Gayle, Bela Fleck, Willie Nelson, Jack Pearson, Jeff Coffin and many others.
